AFPA, Government to Sponsor PESTS Series at TELUS World of Science
The Alberta Forest Products Association is one of the sponsors of a new educational series, developed by the TELUS World of Science, in Edmonton, called PESTS...The Bug Battle Begins.
This series, which runs on Saturdays from March 17 through to April 28, 2007 looks at identifying the insects in your own backyard and gardens; insect borne diseases like West Nile Virus; the bio-diversity of insects and bugs; pests in the city, including Dutch Elm Disease and the small Eurasian Bark Beetle. The final presentation of the series, to be held on April 28 is on the Mountain Pine Beetle. Allan Carroll, a research scientist in insect ecology with the Canadian Forest Service will lead the presentation.
"The Alberta Forest Products Association, and the forest industry, has a long history of supporting education and information efforts in the province," said Neil Shelly, executive director of the AFPA. "This educational series at the TELUS World of Science fits our goal of helping Albertans understand their environment and the many different facets of it. The April 28 presentation, Forests on the Frontline provides another opportunity to inform people about the serious societal impacts that will come about if we cannot control and stop the spread of the Mountain Pine Beetle in our forests."
The Government of Alberta, Sustainable Resource Development is also sponsoring this series. And given the high level of cooperation and partnership between the forest industry and government on the Mountain Pine Beetle battle it is only natural to see both together in this educational opportunity.
The PESTS series is free with paid general admission to the TELUS World of Science. The admission prices are:
Adults (18+) $12.95 Youth (13-17) $10.95 Children (4-12) $9.50 Family (2 adults 4clidren/youth) $47.95
