AADAC on the Issues

How do you put 55 years of experience into three pages? AADAC's policy and position statements attempt to do just that.

Policies are statements of guiding principles adopted by AADAC's board on important addiction topics. They range from a basic code of ethics for staff to statements on controversial subjects like harm reduction.

This issue of Developments presents AADAC's policies on three of the major areas of our business: alcohol, illicit drugs and gambling.

Policy on Alcohol

Alcohol is a drug of choice for about four in five Albertans. Most use this legal drug responsibly; nevertheless, alcohol-related problems cause significant health, social and economic harm each year.

AADAC's policy on alcohol reflects our commitment to actions that will minimize this harm, while recognizing and respecting the freedom of individuals to exercise personal responsibility in their use or non-use of alcohol.

Policy on Illicit Substances

In an ideal world, simply making a drug illegal would prevent everyone from using it. But the fact is that legal deterrents are just one of many important factors in preventing and reducing the harm that illicit drug use causes to people and communities.

AADAC's policy on illicit substances stresses the importance of a balanced approach that integrates harm reduction, demand reduction and supply reduction. Such an approach must draw on the personal strengths of people and the collective strengths of many partners, and must take into account a wide variety of factors that determine overall population health.

Policy on Gambling

As with alcohol use, most Albertans gamble—and most do so responsibly.

AADAC's gambling policy respects people's freedom to use personal responsibility in gambling, and recognizes the benefits of licensed, legal gambling activities. At the same time, our policy recognizes the responsibility that we and other government agencies have to help those who experience problems with their gambling.
