CKUA Opens Its Doors

In celebration of the new Vinyl Library, CKUA opened its doors to the public on Tuesday, June 29th. With more than 1.5 million music tracks, CKUA’s vinyl collection is the creative heart and soul of not only our station but the province of Alberta.

The evening kicked off with a private cocktail reception. Guests included Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel and his wife Lynn, Member of Parliament Laurie Hawn, and Minister Lindsay Blackett. Also among the attendees was NAIT broadcasting student Tyler Daignault, recipient of the John Worthington Hagerman Radio Scholarship. Later the party kicked off CKUA style with Baba spinnin’ his Grooves, and live performances by U22 artists Charlotte and Sarah Command, Tenner Gordon and Painting with Ella.

We want to thank all of you who shared our joy and excitement. For those of you who could not make it, you missed a great party, but at least you have these great photos courtesy of Tracy Kolenchuk.

Missed our open house? Sign up for a FREE hour long tour, July 9-17th.

Blast from the Past

I’m baaaaaaaaaack! My name is Laura Connor (formerly Hussein).

About two years ago, I left my role as the Marketing Coordinator at CKUA to be married overseas and to get to know the world a bit better. I got married in Cyprus in August of 2008 and traveled around for approximately a year. I have visited various parts of Europe, Asia, Middle East and South Pacific regions and spent six months living in Sydney, Australia. I loved learning about new cultures and most especially sampling the food!

Starting June 21st I have taken over for Andra Louie, CKUA’s Marketing Coordinator, while she is away on her maternity leave.

It is great to be back once again! Two years ago I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and most especially the people of CKUA. There truly is no other place like CKUA! This summer, I will be out and about during the various summer festivals, so please come by and say hello.

Another Blast from the Past

I am Terry Kostek and I‘ve landed back in Edmonton after spending a good portion (the wintry parts) of the past couple of years in Mexico. I have had the extreme good fortune to resume the role of Director of Finance at the station and could not be happier. Once you’ve got CKUA in your blood – good luck leaving it behind!

Most recently my travels found me "standing on that corner in Winslow, Arizona," driving whatever portions that are left of the historic Route 66 (don’t forget Winona!) and sitting in on a broadcast from a community radio station in Dixon, New Mexico. There still are a few other places in the world where it’s hand-made radio! Few and far between, but they’re out there.

We’ve got some challenging times ahead of us at CKUA, but I know for sure that our audience always comes through. It’s inspiring, it’s humbling and I am going to do my best to keep those numbers crunching.
