Environmental conservation student Diana Young will be picking trash around Alaskan pipelines this summer.

Ankur Rana hopes to mow lawns.

"That's the only option I have right now," said Rana, a student in electrical engineering.

Last summer was the worst on record for student employment, with almost 20 per cent of students left jobless in July.

In all my previous jobs, including my current one running an HR marketing firm, I’ve hired dozens and dozens of employees – from higher education to high-tech to the HR marketplace, marketing and PR. I’ve played recruiter, hiring manager and human resources, although I’ve never officially held the title of any with the exception of sourcer.  When I first entered the HR marketplace over a decade ago, I went to work as a sourcing account manager for a company called Tapestry.net prior to taking over the marketing communications function and internal sales team.

Employer Relations profile: Anthony Pangilinan

As one of the  Advisors in Employer Relations at CAPS: Your U of A Career Centre, Anthony Pangilinan has been helping employers connect with students and alumni at the University of Alberta (U of A) since February 2001. Also a U of A alumnus, Anthony has a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Political Science.

Anthony actively seeks out organizations to come on campus and recruit the U of A’s best and brightest. He provides advice to organizations on their campus recruiting strategies whether it is through job postings, career fairs, information sessions and interviews. Anthony coordinates a number of career fairs including Careers Day, the Arts Career Fair and the Summer Job Fair. He has done employer presentations on types of internship/coop/practicum opportunities at the U of A and the value of hiring Arts graduates.

Anthony has supreme customer service skills and truly enjoys getting to know each and every employer that works with CAPS.  Building relationships with employers and in the end helping students is his forte.

Prior to CAPS, Anthony worked at Personal Support and Development Network (PSDN) as a Placement Counsellor/Job Developer and at Labour Ready Temporary Services as an Account Representative. He also volunteered at CAPS during his undergrad days.

Anthony is a 3rd degree black belt with World Martial Arts Studio under Master Margitte Hilbig and has competed in point and full contact competitions. He is also member of Delta Upsilon International Fraternity which is a non-secret brotherhood. Anthony is a proud supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and has volunteered for a number of years.
