Reflections on Campaign

There are 36 steps to the 6th floor where the CKUA campaign pledge room is located. Snuggled against the window to the broadcast studio, the admonishing "On Air" light shines impotently next to the studio door that is thrown open wide to the laughter and voices of volunteers; it is campaign time at CKUA.

As the days fly by the campaign takes on a shape much like a community barn-raising. You, the listeners, helped raise the walls when you called from places such as Calgary, Olds, Fort McMurray, Medicine Hat, Edmonton and Pincher Creek. You phoned from Saskatchewan, Nebraska, British Columbia and Newfoundland, Vietnam and Turkey. Bells rang if you were a new donor; energized volunteers completed your pledge form and answered the next call without pause during Double Your Dollars hours. Library "runners" disappeared with lists of your requests and on their return, as if by magic, the announcers had your selections in hand. The tote board came alive, always in motion. The pledgeroom itself served as the contractor to you, the builders.

To each of you who fund Original Radio: you raised $691,447 in support of CKUA with your donations, completing the building structure for this campaign! We are humbled by the support given by every one of you. We are honoured to be able to work with you on our shared journey of support for CKUA in the coming years. Thank you for keeping the music alive.

Listeners are Loving the NEW Online Audio Stream

Many of you have sent us your feedback saying how much you love the new online audio stream. We're glad to hear it!

For those who have not yet checked it out, this new stream is part of a transition to a new digital platform, which will enable CKUA to easily serve all types of computing platforms and mobile devices.

As you listen to the new stream, you will notice some additional features, including song information and album artwork from the track being played. This information may not be available all the time, as CKUA plays music from CD, vinyl and even 78’s, but as we digitize our collection, we'll be able to provide this level of in-depth information via our online stream.

We love hearing from you. Send comments about the new stream to stream@ckua.com.

Capturing Cultural Voices

Last fall, CKUA was pleased to be awarded a $14,000 grant from the Telus Community Board to digitize and make available a multitude of interviews from the 1980s and 1990s. The project is called Capturing Cultural Voices – Digitizing Historical Arts and Cultural Interviews, and here are just a few of the "voices" which will be restored as part of this project:

Former Lieutenant Governor Helen Hunley; Dr. Hugh Dempsey of the Glenbow Museum; Alex Janvier, world famous painter; Fil Fraser, author, broadcaster, co-founder Banff Television Festival; Tantoo Cardinal, actress; Mel Hurtig, writer and publisher; Lois Hole, author and businesswoman at the time and soon to be Lieutenant Governor; and the Honourable Peter Lougheed, politician, Alberta premier.

These and hundreds of other interviews with Albertans in the arts, business and cultural world are included in this project. CKUA was especially thankful to receive this grant as the material is largely on reel and cassette tape, which deteriorates quickly over time and there has been an abiding fear for its preservation for some time.

It's still early days and we will be sharing more details about this project as it unfolds. The day to day programming at CKUA is important, however, there is a long and valuable past residing within the archives of our institution that will be saved for posterity.

Recent Artist Interviews

Recently, CKUA has had the privilege of interviewing a diverse selection of musical artists including Barenaked Ladies, Wil, Derek Trucks, Tom Russell, and Ruth Purves Smith.

If you missed it live, it is not too late to listen to what these artists have to say, visit our Audio Archives to get caught up.

CD of the Week: Zoe Muth & the Lost High Rollers

Reviewed by Allison Brock, host of Wide Cut Country

This girl sounds like she might have come out in the vinyl era - very old school. Truth is, being born in ’79 she was only 10 when the vinyl era started to wane. Zoe’s writing is fantastic and her voice simply washes over you.
