Wide Cut Country 10th Anniversary and live broadcast

With very little standing room left in the Ironwood Stage and Grill, the 10th anniversary celebration and live broadcast of Wide Cut Country on Saturday, March 6th went off without a hitch!

CKUA fans and supporters streamed into the popular Calgary music venue early on Saturday morning to hear and SEE their beloved radio host, Allison Brock, and a line-up of their favourite country musicians, take to the stage. Allison had the honor of welcoming Lynn Miles, Stephen Fearing, Conrad Walz, Tim Williams, Cam Penner, The Joe Defendants, Karla Anderson and Ian Tyson as her guests on this special occasion. Each performance quieted the room in between the appreciative applause and celebratory cheers; the crowd couldn’t get enough!
CKUA congratulates Allison Brock on 10 incredible years of Wide Cut Country!
Happy Birthday, Dear How I Hear It…

The week of February 22nd was a busy one for birthdays. On Monday, How I Hear It celebrated its 10th anniversary – with many good wishes from listeners, gifts for host Monica Miller and, of course, cake! CKUA Engineer, Rod Setter, was gracious enough to share his big day with the program anniversary and later that week, coincidentally, it was Monica Miller’s birthday! CKUA staff love a reason to celebrate (OK, we really just like having cake!).
Congratulations Monica. Your show (and voice) are wonderful. You never cease to switch my mood to better, no matter how bad I am feeling or how good I am feeling, when I listen to your show, I just feel better. I love your subtle humour and your humbleness is a treat. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Congratulations on your 10 years Monica! I love your "mix" of genres. You amaze me with the breadth of your knowledge, and I learn so much from listening to your show.
Peggy Bevan
Congratulations on ten wonderful years of "How I Hear It" -- one of my personal favourite shows on CKUA. As my 17-year-old daughter would say: you rock! Thanks for all the hard work; I can only imagine the time and effort that goes into producing such an entertaining musical program.

Got a good start there, kid! Don't screw it up and, someday, you could be just like me. Oh, sorry, this was meant to be congratulatory!

It’s Early Bird Campaign time…dog-gone-it!

Buster, the CKUA dog
The snow is melting, the sun has started shining (I can’t wait to hit the dog park)… and CKUA Radio Network’s Spring Campaign starts on April 15th. Don’t wait to show your support because CKUA is rewarding Early Bird donors with a special prize.
Donate before midnight on April 18th and you’ll have chance to win a coveted CKUA Tarp at the Edmonton and Calgary Folk Music Festivals, including preferred festival seating, all access passes and backstage privileges.
After a rough start to the decade, CKUA must raise $600,000 this Spring, our largest goal ever. We know we can do it if every listener takes part. Will you do your fair share to help CKUA?
Get involved - make your pledge of support now and help keep independent, Alberta radio strong and healthy. Thank you!
Buster and the whole gang at CKUA
Thank You, we'll miss you...

With the recent budget cuts, CKUA has had to bid farewell to some very special and talented announcers who have given many fine years of service to the station. Brian Golightly has been presenting Sunday Breakfast for some time, and produced a lovely early morning program called Transitions. Don Berner has been the host of A Time for Jazz and Roger Levesque has been hosting jazz on CKUA for a few years, lately on Sunday Night Jazz. Prosper Prodaniuk has been our Future Funk host, bringing the latest in house, techno and other variations of new sounds. Luka Symons began with CKUA in the overnight slot, then moved through the afternoon drive show, and the past few years has been hosting Simply Luka on Saturday nights. In the CKUA news world, both Scott Stevenson and Jeff Spencer have provided regular newscasts from the Calgary studios. We'd like to offer our heartfelt THANK YOU to all of these announcers for their contribution to this station. We'll miss you and we wish you all the very best.
CD of the Week: Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys

If you’re curious about the deep roots of rockabilly, rock and roll and current Western Swing groups like Asleep At The Wheel, check out this 99 track treasure trove of early Western Swing – circa 1932 to 1947. As the ad-blurb says, this set ‘tells the story of Western Swing - the vibrant music that blended jazz with stringbands, took in pop music & the blues and pioneered amplification... contained an authenticity and continues to appeal and inspire’.

Scenes From The Library
The CKUA Library, rich in musical treasures of all kinds, is also rich in learning opportunities for students studying in the field of librarianship.
Laura Tedball, a library technician in the making from Red Deer (who is studying long distance with Mohawk College in Ontario), has just wrapped up a two week practicum at the CKUA Library under librarian Monica Chattaway.
While she has been here, she has helped to catalogue CDs, and prepare CDs for inputting into the digital library. In addition to this, she has done some arts and crafts work, making signs for the ever-evolving LP and CD libraries, with supplies that were taken from the library fund that was generously donated to us by CKUA volunteer and donor Susan Baird.
According to Laura, her time here has been invaluable as a window into the unique world of media librarianship. It has been a wonderful symbiotic relationship, since we have benefited greatly from her being here. In the words of Lionel Rault, "Laura has been an all around sparkplug of enthusiasm, energy, and industry!"
