Canada Day in February?

Has Canada Day moved to the month of February? Sort of. On Wednesday, February 24 CAPS will be hosting the first ever Government of Canada Career Fair in Edmonton in partnership with the Public Service Commission. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Dinwoodie Lounge, 2-000 Students’ Union Building.

The federal Public Service is Canada’s largest employer with over 260,000 employees, hiring thousands of students every year.  "This career fair is an excellent opportunity for students and alumni to learn about the broad range of careers in the federal Public Service and to meet with prospective managers and current public service employees," comments Marcel Préville, Executive Director of the Alberta Federal Council.  "Canada’s population is becoming more diverse and the federal Public Service is looking to reflect this growing diversity."

At this one-day event you will not only be able to learn about job opportunities with the Government of Canada, but you will also be able to attend presentations and workshops on applying the Public Service Commission and a variety of other topics.

Don’t miss this valuable opportunity! For more information about the fair, including a list of departments attending and presentations offered, visit www.fair.jobs.gc.ca.

CAPS Guide to Job Shadowing

You've begun to think about different career and job options. There are a lot of job titles that sound interesting but you don't really know what people in those jobs actually do. Perhaps you have a basic understanding of a field, but you’d like more in-depth, insider knowledge about the day-to-day realities. Even after doing some research, you probably still have many unanswered questions: What is a typical work day like? What is graduate school like? What kind of work-life balance does a career provide? Does a position involve working more with people or information? Does a specific workplace have a healthy culture?

Job shadowing is a way for you to answer these questions and more. Job shadowing is a learning opportunity in which you spend a short time period (from part of a day to several days) accompanying, interviewing and observing an experienced worker at their workplace in order to get first-hand information about a profession.

For more information on job shadowing, check out CAPS Guide to Job Shadowing.

Are you an aspiring poet?

In 1908, Henry Marshall Tory announced his vision for the university: "the modern state university is a people’s institution. The people demand that knowledge shall not be the concern of scholars alone. The uplifting of the whole people shall be its final goal." Over 100 years later, Tory’s vision endures and serves as guiding principle for this university.

The University of Alberta Alumni Association invites students in their graduating year to submit poems inspired by Tory’s vision, but uniquely and personally interpreted. The winning entry will be published in the 2010 Convocation Programs and on the Alumni Association website, and its author will be awarded $300.
