Become a Shadow
Job Shadowing
If you’ve heard of "Take Your Daughter/Son to Work" day, then you’ve heard of job shadowing. But job shadowing isn’t just for kids or high school students. Job shadowing is a learning opportunity in which you spend a short time period accompanying, interviewing and observing an experienced worker at their workplace in order to get first-hand information about a profession.
Job shadowing is a chance to test drive a potential career option with minimal time commitment. By doing a job shadow you can:
- Learn about the day-to-day realities of a field
- Gain valuable career advice and insight
- Make connections and grow your network
Although it may sound intimidating at first, it is possible for you to arrange your own job shadow:
· Narrow down some careers, jobs, industries, or work settings you are interested in learning more about and experiencing first hand
· Identify your beliefs, assumptions and uncertainties about each area of career interest, and translate these into specific questions that need answering
· Research individuals who work in your area of interest, and contact them to inquire about arranging a job shadow
· Be clear about what you are asking for. Prepare a point-form introduction that includes:
o Your name and academic program
o Your connection to the contact (how you heard of them)
o Details about yourself, your situation and how it relates to the person you’re calling
o The purpose of your call (i.e. to do career research through a job shadow), including how much time you’ll need and what kind of information you’re looking for
o Arrange the time, date and location of a job shadow; this may be a partial or full day
o Remember: the worst they can say is ‘no’!
You can meet one-on-one with a CAPS staff member during our free Career Exploration Drop-In Sessions to discuss how to go about arranging your job shadow including finding contacts, cold calling and more. See drop-in dates and times at www.caps.ualberta.ca.
