Opportunities in a Green Economy

According to a Reuters survey (Carbon Salary Survey, June 2009), 68 percent of workers in the green economy feel just as, if not more confident about their job security now as they did before the economic downturn.

It may seem strange, at a time when many workers are worried about their job security, that this group of workers feels confident in their industry, but according to the survey, an increased awareness from government and business about a need for green industry increases stability for workers currently in the industry, and also creates opportunity for job seekers.

Upon hearing the term ‘green job,’ you might think careers in recycling, agriculture or environmental sciences. While this is true, green jobs are diverse and cover many employment sectors. So, what exactly are green jobs? Green jobs shift our economy towards greater sustainability and can be traditional like the ones previously mentioned, a green twist on an existing job (construction workers re-using old materials instead of using new ones) or even something completely new (green investment advisor). There are opportunities to work for a variety of established green organizations, but it is also a great time, if you are entrepreneur, to start your own company and fill a niche in the green economy.

The idea of a green job and green industry is relatively new, and even though it is growing steadily and has the potential to employ hundreds of thousands of people in Canada, citizens need to remain engaged in their government and make their voices heard about the importance of investing in the green economy. According to the report A Green Economic Stimulus Package to Secure our Current and Future Prosperity put out by the David Suzuki Foundation, Sustainable Prosperity and uOttawa, if the government invested $15 billion in the green economy, over 160,000 jobs would be created in Canada alone.
