The countdown’s on towards CKUA’s 2009 Fall Campaign – a 10 day adventure, where your participation will make all the difference.
Running October 15 to 25th, the new and improved 10 day fall campaign offers all the excitement, fun, banter, fabulous music and great prizes found in our traditional 17 day campaign, all at a significantly reduced cost. This means more of your donor dollars can be spent on supporting CKUA’s unique, world class programming.
But you don't need to wait until October 15th - pledge your support and get in on the Early Bird campaign right now!
Campaign-a-licious: The Food that Fuels Fundraising
You’ve no doubt heard stories about the sheer volume of incredible edibles that grace the pledge room during a CKUA fundraiser. Staffers and long time volunteers know about the "fundraiser five" – the 5 pounds gained during any given campaign. We took to the CKUA lunchroom to ask staff about their favourite campaign eats and what they’re looking forward to savoring this campaign.

A Susan "Cakelady" Campbell Creation
Afternoons during the fundraising campaigns just wouldn't be the same without the delicious, delightful, delectable bundles of rice and vegetables and fish from Wasabi Sushi!
-David Ward, host of The Afternoon Edition
Last campaign there was a bakery in Edmonton called Prairie Mill Bread Company that donated huge cinnamon buns. It’s a bakery where everything is organic and made from scratch. The cinnamon buns were about 8 or 9 inches across. They tasted delicious even though they were made with whole wheat flour, no small feat.
-Fran Hodgson, Director of Finance
I love having much better coffee to drink during campaign and Transcend Coffee has the best coffee in town. They’ve helped keep CKUA staff and volunteers well caffeinated during campaign for a few years now and I always look forward to their coffee.
-Katie Sowden, Development Assistant
It just wouldn’t be campaign time without a cake from Susan Campbell. Susan seems to outdo herself each year and I’m wondering what she’s got in store for us this campaign…
-Deanna Fuoco, Volunteer Services Manager
Thank you to all our wonderful food donors!
CKUA Volunteers Getting into Campaign Mode

Hundreds of volunteers across the province are getting geared up for CKUA’s Fall campaign. Shifts are being booked and training is taking place for both new and current volunteers. CKUA recently trained over 20 enthusiastic new volunteers who are eager to help with the myriad of tasks involved in running a campaign that extends from 6am to midnight for 10 days in a row!
On Saturday, October 24th, CKUA Chapter volunteers from across the province will gather in Edmonton to take part in "Chapter Day". It’s great knowing that our volunteers are LITERALLY willing to go that extra mile to help CKUA.
A BIG thank you to all volunteers who are scheduled to help in the upcoming fall campaign! Learn more about volunteering at CKUA.
CKUA Celebrates Alberta Arts Days
What do you get when you mix several musicians, a former poet laureate, a glassblower, AND an Earth Harp? A CKUA celebration of Alberta Arts Days.
From the north to the south, the east to the west - CKUA hit the Alberta highways to discover how people across the province were celebrating Alberta Arts Days, September 18 to 20th.
And what we found is an AMAZING array of talent! Here are just a few of the highlights:

Blues guitarist Simon Budd, Nine to Noon host Lionel Rault and a CKUA listener at Keyano College in Fort McMurray

Singer-songwriter Lindsay Ell on How I Hear It from the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton

Calgary singer-songwriter Kris Demeanor live on CKUA

Allen Christie on Wide Cut Country in Olds, Alberta

The Esplanade Theatre in Medicine Hat

A special thank you to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for generously supporting this project.
CD of the Week: Chris Velan's Solidago
Reviewed by Lionel Rault, host of Nine to Noon
Chris Velan and his brothers built a large fan base in Montreal with the reggae inflected band Equalizer, but it was his love of songwriting that inspired his solo career. Chris. Velan’s 3rd solo CD, Solidago, is our CD of the Week.
From 80’s British alternative to Delta Blues, Velan took it all in, but it was the music of the storyteller songwriters like Dylan, Waits, Knopfler and Neil Young that made the real impact upon him. That, and his uncle’s vast collection of reggae.
