Summer's Final Festivals

Once again, the CKUA crew is looking back on another Festival season and wondering - how in the world did we manage to attend so many events throughout Alberta?
This year, in addition to the usual rounds of jazz, folk and blues festivals, CKUA added a few new events - including a partnership with the world renowned, Edmonton International Fringe Festival.
The festival "Staged a Revolution, to celebrate its 30th anniversary, and CKUA volunteers were on hand take part in the festivities. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to share in the fringe experience - especially the opporutnity for staff and volunteers to go "fringing" together at Transcanada '69.
Another event that brought CKUA into the community was the Edmonton Downtown Business Association’s "The Carbon Footprint" block party on August 21. With solar power provided by the local Solar Energy Society, CKUA was broadcasted over the loud speakers for everyone in the park to enjoy. CKUA volunteers and staff, including The Road Home host Bob Chelmick, greeted interested folks with information about our beloved station. The event reinforced the message that each one of us has an impact on the environment and we can make each do our part to make a difference.
Scenes From the Library

For the past four months, CKUA has been graced with the cheery presence of Step-Student Jennifer Durrant. As a recent graduate from the Grant McEwan Vocal Jazz program, Jennifer has worked as a Step-Student for the CKUA Music Library. While here, she has done several jobs, such as organizing the vast CKUA Audio Tape Library, organizing materials for the busy Summer Festival season, as well as organizing the CKUA Magazine Collection and the CKUA Archives. She also helped out at the Art Walk and the Celtic Festival, being a representative for CKUA at these events.
Jennifer felt that working at CKUA would be a natural fit for her, since she is passionate about music. As an Edmonton native and life-long CKUA enthusiast, Jennifer particularly enjoyed working with the CKUA Archives material, which, as a collection, tells the story of CKUA as a radio station. For a look at some of what Jennifer learned and discovered in her work with the CKUA Archives, check this out.
In her work at CKUA, Jennifer has shown an amazing natural aptitude for organization, and it is obvious that she cares greatly about the work she has done here at CKUA. She has shown such an aptitude for the organizing of material that she has started to consider a library career in the future.
Where ever the future takes her, CKUA was blessed to have her working for us this Summer, and we wish her well in her future endeavors!
