CKUA joins the Edmonton Core Crew’s Carbon Footprint party

CKUA volunteers, radio host Bob Chelmick, and members of the Solar Energy Society (who provided Bob with six months of solar power for his show, The Road Home) will be on hand at the Edmonton Downtown Business Association (DBA) summer block party on Friday, August 21st.

The public is invited to attend and to learn how to reduce their carbon footprint, check out recycling and waste management innovation, enjoy eco-friendly activities and prizes, and visit the CKUA tent as CKUA turns up the volume and provides the event with great music.

The Carbon Footprint, presented by the DBA Core Crew, runs Friday, August 21st from 11:30am to 1:30pm in Abbey Glen Park (10121 102 Street and Jasper Avenue). Stop by and meet Bob Chelmick from noon to 1pm.

The BIG 10 Day Campaign

Can CKUA meet its fundraising goal in 10 days? Yes we can…with your help! The CKUA 2009 Fall campaign kicks off October 15th and runs to October 25th. The shorter format means reduced campaign costs, as well as reduce volunteer and staff "wear and tear". More fun, less time. Mark your calendars!

Magic Moments at the Edmonton Folk Festival

Souljah Fyah gets the crowd grooving on the last, First Friday

CKUA fans, reggae lovers, parents, kids and even dogs took to the street in front of the Canmore Civic Centre for CKUA’s final First Friday, July 31st. Andy Donnelly started the night with a live Celtic Show and earned a new nickname - "Candyman" Donnelly – winning the crowd over with lollypops and Celtic cuddles. Souljah Fyah front woman, Janaya Ellis (Sista J) got the crowd dancing – including Tom Coxworth, who was on hand to host the First Friday concert. It was a perfect evening and a perfect ending to a very successful series.

Follow us on Twitter

Twitter is a social software tool which allows users to Tweet to the world – that is, to send out brief messages which anyone can then receive on their computer or cell phone. For instance, if an artist is scheduled to make a live appearance in the CKUA studios, CKUA might Tweet, "special guest coming up in 10 minutes! Tune in now!"

The beauty of Twitter is that (a) it’s instant, and (b) it’s brief. As soon as CKUA sends out a Tweet, it appears immediately in our followers’ feed. And because Tweets are limited to 144 characters, there isn’t a lot of heavy reading involved. Quick and simple for everyone!

Some of CKUA’s regular Tweets include updates of special guests & programs, links to various features on our website, Top 30 Chart & CD of the Week notifications, campaign news, and prizes. Yes, prizes! Each week CKUA awards one of our followers with a free CD. And all you have to do is become a CKUA follower.

Talented Staff featured in CKUA Music Library

It should come as no surprise that the staff at CKUA Radio would all have an interest in music. It should also come as no surprise that the announcers at CKUA might also be musical movers and shakers in their respective musical genres. What did come as a surprise to the librarian at CKUA, when she researched the output of CKUA staff, was the sheer volume of musical output in our library that many of our staff (and not just the on air folk!) have had a creative hand in.

See this impressive list!
