Folkways: Sounds to Grow On

On Sunday, January 18th CKUA Radio launches a new program, Folkways: Sounds to Grow On.

Hosted by Michael Asch, this 26-part radio series features music from his father’s record company, Folkways Records. Moses Asch produced almost 2200 records in the 38 years he ran his company, which lives on as Smithsonian Folkways Records.

The collection of Folkways music ranges in its enormity and listeners will be delighted to hear a catalogue of musicians including familiar names such as Woody Guthrie, Lucinda Williams and The Carter Family to lesser known artists important to such genres as blues, bluegrass, old-time and country.

Michael Asch explores the catalogue from various perspectives, serious to lighthearted. "There will be shows that will feature music of the civil rights movement and others that will focus on the obscure. I have only one rule; the material I am using comes from the original Folkways catalogue."

Journey through the time and sounds of iconic recordings each Sunday afternoon from 3-4 pm.

CKUA Supporter Establishes Fund for Music Library

Susan Baird, a long-time CKUA listener and subscriber, has generously established a fund that will contribute to the preservation and expansion of CKUA’s world-renowned music library for many generations to enjoy.

The Susan Baird Fund for CKUA’s Music Library, part of the family of CKUA endowment funds at The Calgary Foundation, has been created with a gift of $10,000. Susan, who has also planned her estate to further contribute to the fund, wanted to establish the fund sooner rather than later. "It occurred to me that establishing the fund now would give me the satisfaction of seeing the benefits of the gift start to accrue during my lifetime." Susan got in touch with CKUA’s Fund Development Office to discuss her interest in making a contribution to the collection that constitutes the very heart of CKUA.

CKUA’s music library, spanning almost one hundred years of recorded music, and containing more than 1.5 million selections, is one of the most significant collections of music in North America. It is a constant source of inspiration for our announcers and our audience, providing the CKUA community with an invaluable cultural resource that fuels great programming and music appreciation.

"Since designating CKUA as a beneficiary in my will, I have thought about how best I might direct that funding. CKUA has brought such a variety of music into my life. My tastes just keep growing, thanks to CKUA’s most knowledgeable programmers and their wide-ranging music selections. Directing the funds to the CKUA music library seemed like a great way to support this diversity into the future."

"The Susan Baird Fund for the CKUA Music Library creates a very important legacy, building on Susan’s past and present support to guarantee a bright, sustainable future for this essential collection," says General Manager Ken Regan, "we are extremely grateful to Susan for her enduring commitment, vision and generosity towards the CKUA community."

For more information about how you can contribute to CKUA’s future, please contact Laura Svajlenko at (780) 428-2030.

Artist: Ariane Mahryke Lemire
Album: Double Entendre

Edmonton-based chanteuse Ariane Mahryke Lemire is a fresh, anomalous presence in the world of singer-songwriters in Edmonton. For starters, she is bilingual, and passionately so, with her debut CD Double Entendre featuring two CDs – one entirely with English songs, the other with French songs, all of which are written by her. Then there is her lyricism – her song lyrics (which could lead a separate existence as poetry by itself) are playful, quirky and robust, and simply crackling with rich references to a wide variety of things. Ariane is obviously a born writer who is itching to explore life via words and images. And then there is the music she makes - there is no pinning her down to genre. One minute she is singing an up-tempo folk pop song with playful lyrics, the next minute she is purring seductively in a slow jazz-like song.

On her website, Ariane cites some of her influences as being Holly Cole, Ani DiFranco, Leonard Cohen, Damien Rice and Francis Cabrel. In terms of quirky sensibility, Ariane seems a lot like Jane Siberry in that she seems very free spirited in her yen to use whatever musical and lyrical colours are on the palette in front of her. It is not surprising, therefore, that at the 2008 Western Canadian Music Awards Ariane received the "Outstanding Francophone Recording" award.

Ariane is presently working on two new albums which will be released in Fall 2009. One album will be in French (which will be called Decousue), which will feature a song in Spanish as well, and the other album will be in English.
